When my sister moved in with us after her diagnosis, we all tiptoed around her like she was made of glass. She finally told us, kindly, that she would rather have independence with risk than safety with pity. So we made real changes: grab bars, a shower chair, rearranged cabinets, door levers instead of knobs. Nothing fancy, but each change handed her back a piece of her own life. The surprise was what it did for us. Once the house worked, we stopped hovering and went back to being siblings, roommates, and friends. Adaptation was not the sad part of our story. It was the beginning of the good part.
