After my accident I measured everything against my old life and my able-bodied friends, and I lost that comparison every single day. What changed was a coach who asked me to stop competing with ghosts and start competing with yesterday. Could I transfer a little smoother than last month? Swim one more lap than last week? Suddenly I was winning, regularly. My life did not shrink when I started using a wheelchair; my scoreboard was just wrong. Now I celebrate my own milestones out loud, and I have never felt more like myself.
