For most of my life I thought being helpful meant having the answer ready before someone finished their sentence. Then my daughter told me, very calmly, that talking to me felt like a consultation. That one sentence rearranged me. I started practicing something simple: when someone shares a problem, I ask one question before I offer anything. What was that like for you? What do you think you want to do? Nine times out of ten they never wanted my solution at all. They wanted to be heard, and once they were, the conversation went somewhere real. I still catch myself reaching for answers. But the relationships that matter most to me got better the day I decided my opinions could wait.
