I walked into the gym at forty-one convinced weight rooms were for other people, and spent my first month doing cautious machine circuits in the corner. Then a trainer taught me to deadlift, and picking a heavy barbell off the floor rewired something in me. Strength training gave me receipts for my own capability. If my body can learn this, what else have I been wrongly ruling out? My back stopped aching, my jeans fit, sure. But the real change is that I carry myself differently, at work and everywhere else. I am not chasing a smaller body anymore. I am building a more capable one, and I have never liked her more.
